Chapter 3: KAYLA JANSSON - part 7

INT. KAYLA JANSSON'S SUV - CONTINUOUS

KAYLA JANSSON
What do you mean you'll be right
back?

PAUL JANSSON
Just get him fixed up.

Paul slams the door shut and sprints towards an alley across the street.

Gun shots soon ring out as Paul opens fire on the thugs in the distance.

KAYLA JANSSON
Becky, I need you to check under
your seat and tell me if there's a
first aid kit.

Becky doesn't respond. She's transfixed on the gun fight going on outside the SUV.

KAYLA JANSSON (cont'd)
Becky!

BECKY HENDERSON
Um, I'm sorry, what?

KAYLA JANSSON
Is there a first aid kit under your
seat?

Becky checks around under her seat as the gunfire outside stops.

BECKY HENDERSON
Uh, yeah.

Becky pulls out the first aid kit and hands it to Kayla.

KAYLA JANSSON
Thanks.

Becky reaches out to hand Kayla the bag, but drops it and screams instead.

Kayla turns around sharply to see a zombie in a business suit reaching into the shattered driver side window.

The zombie is grabbing at Gregg's arm trying to pull him out of the vehicle.

Kayla grabs Gregg's other arm and tries to pull him free but loses her grip due to the blood on her hands.

The zombie stops pulling and bites down on Gregg's forearm before a series of shots ring out and the zombie falls to the ground.

Paul appears in the window a few seconds later and opens the door.

PAUL JANSSON
Help me move him to the back, we've
gotta get out of here.

INT. KAYLA JANSSON'S SUV - A FEW MINUTES LATER

Paul roars the car through the deserted city streets as Kayla cares for Gregg in the middle seat and Becky fills out coloring books with Josh in the back.

PAUL JANSSON
(to Kayla)
How's he doing?

KAYLA JANSSON
He's gonna need stitches but, I
don't think I can do them while
we're moving.

Paul takes in a deep breath a lets it out in a sigh as he thinks hard on the situation.

PAUL JANSSON
I got an idea.

EXT. KAYLA JANSSON'S SUV - CONTINUOUS

Paul jerks the wheel to the left and pulls the car into a parking garage, tires squealing the whole time.

INT. KAYLA'S SUV/PARKING GARAGE - EVENING

Kayla begins threading a needle as soon as Paul puts the vehicle in park.

KAYLA JANSSON
(to Paul)
Do you have any alcohol?

He gives her a quizzical look.

KAYLA JANSSON (cont'd)
(impatiently)
For the wound and the needle.

PAUL JANSSON
Oh, yeah.

He reaches into his pocket, pulls out a flask, and hands it to Kayla.

Kayla opens the flask, smells it and almost gags on the scent.

KAYLA JANSSON
Jesus.

Paul is about to respond when he notices Josh staring at Gregg's wound in horror.

PAUL JANSSON
(to Josh)
Hey, buddy, how about you and me
take a walk and see if we can't
find a candy machine around here
somewhere while your Mommy and
Becky fix up Mr., um, Gregg.

Josh's face lights up a little.

JOSH JANSSON
Okay, Daddy!

Josh climbs through to the front seat and he and Paul head out in search of a vending machine while Kayla stitches up Gregg.

BECKY HENDERSON
Is it safe for them to be wandering
around out there?

KAYLA JANSSON
Paul can take care of himself.

BECKY HENDERSON
Oh my god!

KAYLA JANSSON
What?

Kayla scans the parking garage in frantic fear.

BECKY HENDERSON
Look at his hand.

Kayla is filled with relief until she looks at the bite mark on Gregg's hand which now looks all swollen and discolored.

KAYLA JANSSON
Jesus! How could it be that
infected already!?

Kayla's lost in thought for a moment while she stares at the wound before finally snapping back into the moment.

KAYLA JANSSON (cont'd)
Well, let's just take care of the
gunshot, we'll have to get him to a
hospital.

BECKY HENDERSON
If there's even a hospital left. We
haven't seen another person that
wasn't trying to-

Becky's cut short when she sees Paul rushing back to the SUV carrying Josh.

PAUL JANSSON
We need to get the hell out of here
now!

COMMENTARY: Ya know, I was real excited about this Chapter when I first came up with the idea. I figured a soon to be divorced couple being forced to work together during a zombie invasion would be fun characters to play with, but it just never seemed natural or logical to slow the action down enough to fully bring that up. I guess we'll see what happens in these last few pieces though.
