Chapter 3: KAYLA JANSSON - part 3

INT. KAYLA JANSSON'S LIVING ROOM - A FEW MINUTES LATER

Gregg nervously paces around the living room with his cell phone to his ear as Paul ties a bag of canned foods shut.

Kayla enters the room carrying, JOSH JANSSON, her six year old son.

The little boy's face lights up when he sees Paul.

JOSH JANSSON
DADDY!

Paul rushes to Kayla and takes Josh from her.

PAUL JANSSON
What's up, little guy?

JOSH JANSSON
Mommy says that we're going on a
trip?

PAUL JANSSON
That's right.

Gregg get's his wife's voicemail, hangs up and hits redial as he grows slightly more impatient.

JOSH JANSSON
To Disney Land?

PAUL JANSSON
Not that kind of trip, buddy.

JOSH JANSSON
But you're coming with us right?

PAUL JANSSON
I sure am.

Gregg flips his phone shut in frustration.

GREGG DONLEY
(to Paul)
Are they still out there?

Paul hands Josh back to Kayla and heads to the front window.

PAUL JANSSON
I can't see much, but I think they
all went next door.

GREGG DONLEY
Good.

Gregg makes his way to the front door.

PAUL JANSSON
What are you doing?

GREGG DONLEY
I've got to go.

PAUL JANSSON
Are you crazy, man? They could be
right outside the door for all we
know.

GREGG DONLEY
I was supposed to pick my son up
from baseball practice ten minutes
ago.

PAUL JANSSON
Wait, wait, wait.

Gregg stops at the door and turns around.

GREGG DONLEY
What?

PAUL JANSSON
We'll all go. The news said that
the best thing to do is to stick
together. We'll stop, get your kid,
then we'll all head to the prison
together.

GREGG DONLEY
Okay, but we have to leave now.

KAYLA JANSSON
Did you just say the prison?

PAUL JANSSON
Yeah. Can we take your car? I think
it's the only way we can get
everyone to fit.

KAYLA JANSSON
Yeah, that's fine. It's in the
garage, but what's this about a
prison?

PAUL JANSSON
It's an abandoned prison. The
military's using it as a fallout
until they can figure out what's
going on and how to stop it.

KAYLA JANSSON
Okay.

PAUL JANSSON
Let's go.

INT. KAYLA JANSSON'S GARAGE - EVENING

KAYLA JANSSON
(handing Paul her keys)
You drive, I'll ride in back with
Josh.

PAUL JANSSON
Okay.

Paul and Gregg hop into the front while Kayla and Josh get in the back.

Paul pushes a button to open the garage door and waits patiently.

PAUL JANSSON
(looking in the rear view
mirror)
Damnit!

GREGG DONLEY
What?

PAUL JANSSON
My car's in the way.

Gregg jerks himself around to see out the back window.

GREGG DONLEY
Want me to move it?

PAUL JANSSON
Nah, you take the wheel.

Paul pulls the garage door opener off the ceiling and gets out of the SUV.

PAUL JANSSON (cont'd)
I'm gonna close the door behind me,
get in my car and then open the
door. I'll wait for you at the end
of the drive way. Got it?

GREGG DONLEY
(shifting himself into the
driver's seat)
Yeah, yeah I got it.

Paul closes the SUV's door and heads out of the garage before pushing the button and closing it's door behind him.

Gregg pulls his cell phone out of his pocket and tries calling his wife again.

JOSH JANSSON
Where's Daddy going?

KAYLA JANSSON
He just had to go move his car.

JOSH JANSSON
But, he's coming with us right?

Gregg flips his phone shut in frustration after getting his wife's voicemail again.

KAYLA JANSSON
Yeah, honey, he's coming with.

JOSH JANSSON
Does that mean he's gonna stay for
good?

KAYLA JANSSON
I don't know, baby.

Just then the garage door begins to open and Gregg starts up the car as Kayla helps Josh buckle up.

With the garage door half open they hear tires squealing on the road outside before the sound of crunching metal and then silence.
